Many people think with a salt water generator they never have to check chemical levels. This could not be farther from the truth. With a salt water system you are producing liquid chlorine and adding it to the pool every time the pump runs. Liquid chlorine has a PH of 13ppm meaning your pool water PH will always be going up making your pool out of balance. You will need to add PH decrease (preferred muratic acid) to your pool every week as needed to control the ever rising PH level. Typically a pool of 15 - 20,000 gallons water capacity will use 1 gallon of muratic acid a week to keep pool in check. Always use a test kit to see what the pool really needs and never add more then 1 gallon of acid at a time. Too much acid will lower PH level (below 7.4ppm) making the water corrosive and will cause damage to pool surface and equipment. If the PH level of the water is too high the water will become saturated with minerals and eventually they will bond to pool surface making it rough. You can test for minerals using a total dissolved test "TTDS" test, if levels are too high you will have to replace pool water.

-Cleaning the cell and the importance of this!
Keeping the chemicals balanced will reduce the amount of time the cell has to be cleaned. All salt water systems have to have the cell taken out and cleaned. Most manufactures systems offer reverse polarity and state the cells are self cleaning this is not true. All units currently on the market require the cell to be cleaned as needed. The cell will become dirty with calcium deposits and can be cleaned by soaking the cell in muratic acid until clean. When the cell becomes dirty it will not produce chlorine so always check the cell first if the unit is not producing chlorine. The cells do have a life span and will need to be replaced every 2-3 years on average.

-Preferred units
StingrayPool.com offers as preferred salt water generator units Goldline Agua Rite, Zodiac LM3, Jandy Aguapure, Goldline Agua Trol (for aboveground pools). Pentair Itellichlor. All units have manufactures warranty and are offered at StingrayPool.com at wholesale prices.

Ask StingrayPool.com!

StingrayPool.com is the only website run by experienced pool and spa technicians.
